Framingham Biographies

The following collection of biographies have been compiled by FHC volunteers Jane Whiting, Dawne Buckley, Martha Davidson, Dana Ricciardi, and Pat Lavin. The purpose of this project is to highlight individuals – farmers, businessmen and women, inventors, teachers, artists, soldiers, philanthropists, etc. – who help to tell the larger story of Framingham’s rich history.

Framingham Illustrated, 1880-1980

Thirty-eight lithotype illustrations from photographs of Framingham were published in 1880 by the Lithotype Printing Co. of New York, NY. The photos are grouped to represent the three principal villages of Framingham – Framingham Centre; South Framingham; and Saxonville. These books were sold door to door, and customers could purchase a small album representing a single village, or a larger album combining all three.

Framingham Postcard Collection

The postcard collection at the Framingham History Center brings us a kaleidoscope of Framingham vistas, mostly from the early twentieth century, the golden age of the postal card. These postcards capture the appearance of buildings, streets, and landscapes that in many cases have changed markedly over time. The images also record transportation patterns and the beginnings of telegraph, telephone and power lines connecting residents with their neighbors and the outside world.

Thomas Nixon Tune Book

Thomas Nixon Jr. (1762-1842) was thirteen years old when he accompanied his father to the fighting at Concord and Lexington. He served as fifer in his uncle’s brigade during battles in and around New York and left the army in 1780, returning to Framingham where he built a house that still stands on Edmands Road. At some point during his military career, probably in 1778, he acquired a tune book that had been compiled by a fellow fifer, Joseph Long. Sixty-two pages of tunes and a musical tutor made up the book when it came into Nixon’s hands; he added another 42 pages of music. This is one of about twelve known tune books from the Revolutionary War.

Anne Livermore Rookey studied the tune book thoroughly for her Masters thesis at Brandeis University in 1997. She also photographed each page, and Aldo Abreu later scanned the pages to edit and create the images used here.
