Diplomatic relations have certainly evolved since 1846 when Dr. Peter Parker was appointed as the first American diplomat to China. Dr. Parker’s story from his boyhood in Framingham to working in China as a medical missionary is one of global significance. The FHC was incredibly disappointed when we were told by several conservators that his diplomatic uniform—a treasured artifact in our collection —was beyond repair. Thankfully Historical Costumer Henry Cooke was able to take on the monumental task of restoring this severely moth-eaten and damaged piece.
