This artist talk will focus on cross-cultural change and transformation through personal ‘lived’ experiences. The shifting of languages spoken, of cities lived, and most importantly of what it means to be a ‘immigrant’ in the world today, is redefined as we move from one individual to the next.
The hands-on workshop will include the exploration and construction of individual ‘suitcases’ that will use words, imagery, photographs, and memorabilia to explore family history, ancestry, and storytelling.
Note: Attendees are encouraged to bring originals or copies of (vintage) family photographs to use in the art-making process.Nilou Moochhala’s visual practice has been channeled into examining issues of cross-cultural change and transformation through collaging, print, and assemblage techniques. Originally from Mumbai, she has been inspired to juxtapose found objects, memorabilia, and use of language to create social and political narratives, be it in public street spaces or private art galleries.
