Diplomat in China: Framingham’s Peter Parker – Virtual Program

*Virtual Zoom Program*
Featuring Dana Dauterman Ricciardi

Peter Parker’s diplomatic uniform is currently on exhibit both online and in the Edgell Memorial Library as part of the Framingham’s Top Ten exhibition. This uniform, dignified and radiant after extensive conservation, is a treasured piece of Parker’s legacy. Key to understanding its significance is the story of the man who wore it: one of humble beginnings in Framingham, and a lifetime of work that opened the way for friendship and diplomatic relations between the ancient empire of China and the young republic of the United States of America.

During this program, the FHC’s Curator Emerita Dana Dauterman Ricciardi, will provide a glimpse of Peter Parker’s pioneering achievements as a medical missionary and diplomat in a strange country half way around the world in the 1830s, 40s and 50s. Details from his letters and journals, along with contemporary images, introduce us to the man who won the confidence and respect of Chinese and Americans of all walks of life.

Tickets are $5/FHC members and $10/not yet members. Purchase tickets below. A Zoom meeting link along with instructions on how to join the program will be emailed to you.

Ticket sales will end on June 13 at 11:59pm. Questions? Email laura@framinghamhistory.org.
