Between the Lines: Interpreting the Lives of Enslaved People in Framingham and the Royall House

Presenter: Kyera Singleton, The Royall House & Slave Quarters Executive Director & Stacen Goldman, FHC Curator

So often, traditional archival sources offer very little information about enslaved people. To reconstruct their lives, historians must be prepared to read between the lines and against the grain. Join Royall House & Slave Quarters Executive Director Kyera Singleton and FHC Curator Stacen Goldman as they demonstrate how one analyzes primary sources regarding enslaved people, including the four bills of sale in the Framingham History Center’s collection. They will touch on the challenging process in which museum historians research these stories and explain the museum’s role in sharing this important work. It is their hope that you will more regularly ponder the question: whose history has been preserved and, more importantly, whose has not?
