Description Colored Postcard, "Framingham, Mass. Gates Elm."
The Hugh C. Leighton Co. Manufacturers, Portland, ME U.S.A.

On Gates Street north of today's Massachusetts Turnpike, it was sometimes called Rugg elm, due to its location adjacent to the Rugg House. The tree was much photographed and written about as the largest or oldest elm in New England. Though its age is unknown, the elm's span exceeded 150 feet. During construction of the Mass. Pike, the ailing tree was removed.
