Description LIBERTY SQUARE

Liberty Square is now known as McGrath Square, renamed for John J. McGrath, a native of Saxonville who died in World War I. In the 1880s scene the large building at the left, centered between two other buildings, was remodeled in the French mansard style shortly after the 1880 view was taken. On the left (left to right), the storefronts in the 1880 view are: E.F. Wells Drygoods / Boys Shoes & Rubbers, Wm. Scott Jones Shoes, Pictures Framed to Order, Saloon, and Barber, with tenements for rent above. At right center is L.F. Fuller's dry goods store and post office. In 1880 Liberty Square was known for the Republican rally held there in 1878.
