WAVERLY BUILDINGS
Just south of the railroad tracks, the oldest business block in South Framingham, the Waverly Building was still standing in 1880. Many of the following views were taken from the large cupola on top of this building.
The Waverly Building had been constructed in 1851 by Elias Howe, across the tracks from the South Framingham Hotel. The spacious Waverly Hall on the second floor was home to a Baptist society, lectures, entertainments, and eventually town meetings. The Waverly Building burned down in a winter fire in 1905 and was replaced by the Bullard Building, a smaller but more fire-proof structure a year later. |
